Activists win Asian ‘Nobel Prize’

The mayor of Hiroshima, in Japan, and a Chinese photographer who has documented pollution in the face of official harassment are among the winners of this year's Ramon Magsaysay prize.

The award, named after an ex-president of the Philippines, is widely seen as Asia's version of the Nobel Prize. Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba, a survivor of the WWII nuclear bomb, has led a global campaign for nuclear disarmament.

UN to launch Pakistan flood appeal

The UN is to launch an appeal to help Pakistan tackle the country's worst flooding in 80 years.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon issued an urgent plea for donors to "generously support Pakistan at this difficult time". A UN official said the disaster had now affected nearly 14 million people, eclipsing the scale of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

China landslide: More than 700 people confirmed dead

More than 700 people are now known to have died in a massive landslide in North West China making it one of the deadliest incidents so far in the country's worst flooding in a decade.

A frantic search is continuing for the more than 1,000 people still missing. Buildings were hit by a wall of mud so mighty that buildings seven storeys high crumpled like paper, says media reporters in Gansu province. He says rescuers are searching by hand in the remote, mountainous region.

Rice yields falling under global warming

Global warming is cutting rice yields in many parts of Asia, according to research, with more declines to come.

Yields have fallen by 10-20% over the last 25 years in some locations.

The group of mainly US-based scientists studied records from 227 farms in six important rice-producing countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, India and China. This is the latest in a line of studies to suggest that climate change will make it harder to feed the world's growing population by cutting yields.

Death rate doubles in Moscow as heat wave continues

Moscow's health chief has confirmed the mortality rate has doubled as a heat wave and wildfire smog continues to grip the Russian capital.

There were twice the usual number of bodies in the city's morgues, Andrei Seltsovsky told reporters. Meanwhile, a state of emergency has been declared around a nuclear reprocessing plant in the southern Urals because of nearby wildfires. And there was a new warning over shortfalls in Russia's grain harvest.

Sudan suspends BBC Arabic on FM radio

Sudan has halted BBC Arabic broadcasts on FM radio stations in four northern cities, including the capital Khartoum. It said the move was not related to the content of broadcasts, but to breaches of the accord governing BBC activities.

President Zardari returns to his country after a foreign tour which has prompted widespread criticism

Nearly 14 million Pakistanis have been affected by the floods

Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari has returned to his flood-stricken country, after a foreign tour which has prompted widespread criticism.

Critics were angry he was not at home to oversee the government's response to the disaster, and continued his visit to Europe as the floods worsened. Mr Zardari is expected to go to some of the affected areas. But his office said he had been holding meetings since his return and did not plan to visit those areas on Tuesday August 10.

Cameron 'anger' at slow pace of Turkish EU negotiations

David Cameron has promised to "fight" for Turkey's membership of the European Union, saying he is "angry" at the slow pace of negotiations.

On his first visit as prime minister, he said the country could become a "great European power", helping build links with the Middle East. He compared hostility to the membership bid in some parts of the EU with the way the UK's entry was once regarded.

EU & Canada tighten sanctions against Iran

EU foreign ministers have adopted tougher sanctions targeting Iran's energy sector, in an effort to block its controversial nuclear programme.

There are new restrictions on foreign trade, financial services and the oil and gas sectors, the backbone of Iran's economy. Officials said the package was "by some way the most far-reaching sanctions adopted by the EU against any country".

UK court action over Congolese 'illegal minerals'

Legal action has been launched against the UK for allegedly failing to refer firms trading in "conflict minerals" from DR Congo for UN sanctions.

Campaign group Global Witness has gone to the High Court for a judicial review, saying the UK government is breaching its legal obligations. There are global efforts to halt the trade in minerals from areas controlled by armed rebels in the African state.
