GB's Turner and Sharman reach European hurdles semis

European Athletics Championships 2010, Venue: Barcelona Dates: 27 July - 1 August

Great Britain's Andy Turner and Will Sharman both qualified for the semi-finals of the men's 110m hurdles at the European Athletics Championships.

Turner, ranked third in Europe in 2010, won his heat in 13.48 seconds after European champion Stanislav Olijar had been disqualified for a false start. Sharman, who beat Turner in the trials, finished third in his heat in 13.60.

Shin secures Evian Masters title to regain world number one status

South Korea's Jiyai Shin made birdie on the final hole to secure the Evian Masters title and regain her crown as the world's number one female golfer.

Shin's putt completed a sparkling five-under-par round of 67 and meant overnight leader Morgan Pressel had to sink her own birdie putt on the last to force a playoff, but her effort narrowly missed.

Mark Hughes set to become new Fulham manager

Fulham have reached an agreement with Mark Hughes for him to become their new manager, Sport experts understand.

The Craven Cottage club said on Thursday July 29 that they expect to name their new boss within the next 48 hours. Former Manchester United and Chelsea striker Hughes, 46, has been out of work since being sacked as Manchester City manager in December 2009.

Elena Dementieva returns from injury with Stanford win

World number six Elena Dementieva returned from an eight-week injury lay-off with victory over Japan's Kimiko Date Krumm in Stanford, USA.

The Russian, playing for the first time since retiring from her French Open semi-final against Francesca Schiavone on 3 June, won 3-6 6-3 6-4.

Peter Ebdon plays down his Shanghai Masters chances

In a moment of unusual candour, former world champion Peter Ebdon has released a statement playing down his Shanghai Masters chances.

Ebdon, 39, gets married this weekend and faces a qualifier in Sheffield next week for the tournament in September. The pre-emptive warning is understood to have been made to provide bookmakers with advance notice of his prospects.

Del Bosque tips Spain to dominate

Andres Iniesta's strike gave Spain a 1-0 extra-time win over the Netherlands in Sunday's (July 11) Johannesburg final to add the World Cup to the Euro 2008 triumph.

And Del Bosque said: "I think our effort, our flair is never-ending.

"This World Cup draws from what we did in 2008 and it is the continuity and continuation of a very good legacy." Iniesta's strike deep in the 116th minute settled a nervy, ill-tempered affair - one that failed in many ways to live up to pre-match expectations.

Ladies' champion Reanne Evans beaten on main tour debut

Reanne Evans lost 4-2 to China's Liu Chuang in the Players Tour Championship on her professional tour debut.

The 24-year-old ladies' world champion is the first woman to compete on the main circuit for 15 years. The six-time world title-holder was given a wild card to the professional tour after winning her last 61 matches.

Iran bans girls' football team from Youth Olympics over uniform

An Iranian official has rejected the new uniform for the girls' football team, saying it's too "inappropriate," the semiofficial ISNA news agency reported.

Marzieh Akbarabadi, the head of the Physical Education Organization, deemed the new uniforms as "inappropriate" after being presented with the new gear, ISNA said Thursday July 8.

Armstrong Tour bid 'over' after disastrous day in the Alps

Lance Armstrong's bid for an eighth win in the Tour de France came to a sorry end on a dramatic eighth stage of the Tour de France won by Andy Schleck of Luxembourg.

Australia's Cadel Evans took over the race leader's yellow jersey, leading Schleck by just 20 seconds, with defending champion Alberto Contador in third place, one minute and one second down.

Lotus set to switch to Renault engines next season

The new Lotus team is closing on a deal to switch to Renault engines next year.

Lotus team principal Tony Fernandes and technical director Mike Gascoyne had a meeting with Renault on Sunday morning at the British Grand Prix. Both sides are keen on a deal, which is expected to include road car tie-ins.
