Shin secures Evian Masters title to regain world number one status | CASPIAN BUSINESS NEWS

Shin secures Evian Masters title to regain world number one status

South Korea's Jiyai Shin made birdie on the final hole to secure the Evian Masters title and regain her crown as the world's number one female golfer.

Shin's putt completed a sparkling five-under-par round of 67 and meant overnight leader Morgan Pressel had to sink her own birdie putt on the last to force a playoff, but her effort narrowly missed.

Pressel finished level with South Korea's Na Yeon Choi and fellow American Alexis Thompson one stroke behind Shin, who completed her seventh LPGA victory in the last two years.

The 22-year-old took the first prize purse of $487,500 and was reinstated as world number one when the rankings were released on Monday July 26.

Shin spent seven weeks in the top slot after Lorena Ochoa, from Mexico, retired but relinquished her title when she missed two events after undergoing emergency appendectomy surgery. She is the first ever South Korean to win the Evian Masters title and after her win in France she told the LPGA's official website: "On the final holes I realized I really could win so I got really nervous. But I kept thinking to just focus and trust myself.

"I did not manage a birdie on the 18th all week and I started to pray that I would do it today. I hit the last putt well and it went in." I feel really unbelievable. I really love this event. This is my favorite event, so I feel really happy to win here.

"I hope to be the first of many (South Korean winners). I love this tournament, it is my favorite one and the place I like best so I am really happy to have won it."
